Brief History of Interlocking
Pavers
Traditionally paving for driveways, patios, and other forms have been done in
asphalt or concrete (broom-finished, exposed aggregate).
In the last 10 to 20 years, a new alternative has become increasingly popular,
and
that is interlocking pavers which can be used in all the same projects.
Interlocking pavers boast several distinct advantages over asphalt or concrete,
and
are now being specified by practically all architects for jobs that require aesthetically pleasing
finishes.
How Pavers are installed
Pavers can be installed by the home-owner, but it is a physically demanding job.
As professional installers, we are accustomed to this and come with the knowledge and appropriate equipment to do
the job professionally. When installing, the first consideration is the finished height, and the slope required for
drainage purposes. Often excavation is required to remove old materials prior to commencing the work.
To insure stability and level over the years, a properly compacted gravel base
must be prepared first. Once the base is in and has been compacted, a layer of sand is added which is also required
to be compacted and then screeded level. The pavers are then laid on this layer of sand and custom cut to properly
fit the work area.
In 95% of the jobs, a hidden concrete bead is laid to hold the outside pavers in
place (absolutely essential in some cases) and then sand is compacted into the entire area.
A sealant can be applied on the pavers to seal the cracks and to give a bright,
shiny appearance. Most customers prefer not to use this technique, as they find the natural look more appealing. If
you do choose a sealant be very careful; the correct sealant is required and it must be applied properly and at the
correct time or you run the risk of obtaining a poor finish that is unsightly.
When the work is performed by Artistic Pavers, a site clean-up is performed on
completion.
